Dr. J. Sebag is the founding Director of the VMR Institute, Huntington Beach, CA and professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles.
Upon graduating from the Bronx High School of Science in 1969 and Columbia College in 1973, Dr. Jerry Sebag conducted research at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden as the Thord-Gray Fellow of the American-Scandinavian Foundation. In 1979, Dr. Sebag received his M.D. degree from the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia University. Following post-doctoral residency training in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to conduct basic research at the Gerontology Institute of I.N.S.E.R.M. in Paris, France. At the successful completion of a Vitreo-Retinal fellowship with Charles Schepens et al at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Sebag moved to Huntington Beach in 1986 and began specializing in laser therapy, injections, and surgery of vitreous, macula, and retina.
Considered one of the world’s leading authorities on vitreous, Dr. Sebag has authored 3 books, 67 peer-reviewed articles, 46 chapters, and 18 guest editorials. He is a full Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles and has been visiting professor and an invited/named lecturer at many institutions around the world. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), Dr. Sebag has delivered many named lectures and received many awards, including a First Prize from the American Health Foundation, a prize from Harvard Medical School Bicentennial Program, the Treacher-Collins Prize of the Ophthalmological Society of the United Kingdom, the Heed and Knapp fellowships, and honor awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1994, the Vitreous Society in 2002, and the Fondazione Bietti in 2004. In 2006 Dr. Sebag was inducted as a member of the venerable and prestigious American Ophthalmological Society. In 2010 Dr. Sebag was appointed a Fellow of ARVO, the world’s premier eye research organization.
